Spijkerbroekenspel

For many years, I’ve had a dream: to make economic concepts accessible through interactive games and simulations. That ambition was inspired by the way the game Civilization turns complex economic and societal dynamics into engaging gameplay.
Back when I was a student, I had little to no programming experience. Even so, I managed to create a working version of the well-known Jeans Game (Spijkerbroekenspel) in Excel. We’re talking about the 1990s. While the concept worked well, the technology was fragile. A single incorrect input from a participant could make it impossible to calculate valid results, causing the entire simulation to break down.
Fast forward to 2026, and the possibilities are completely different.
Using the principles of Vibe Coding, I was able to build a fully functional WordPress plugin in just three evenings. What would once have taken weeks or even months became achievable through a combination of domain knowledge, creativity, and modern AI-assisted development methods.
My goal was straightforward: create a simulation that is easy to install as a WordPress plugin and robust enough to handle user mistakes. Incorrect input should never bring the game to a halt. Instead, the system validates entries and ensures the simulation can always continue.

More Than Just a Game

The simulation not only helps students understand economic processes but also encourages collaboration, communication, and social interaction. That is why I see great potential for its use during orientation programs, project weeks, and economics courses. Participants learn not only about economics, but also about each other.

Key Economic Themes Covered in the Simulation

Key Economic Themes Covered in the Simulation

Raw materials such as cotton are often sourced in one country, while manufacturing takes place somewhere else. The simulation makes global supply chains tangible and easy to understand.

Costs & Profitability

Students make decisions regarding labor costs, transportation, and material purchasing, while immediately experiencing the impact on financial performance.

Working Conditions

What are the consequences of low wages in production countries for workers, communities, and the environment?

Circular Economy & Sustainability

How can a supply chain become more sustainable? Topics include recycling, reducing water consumption, and responsible business practices.
What I find most rewarding is seeing an idea that started more than 25 years ago in an Excel spreadsheet evolve into a modern digital learning environment.

And it’s not just an idea anymore. The plugin is now available on GitHub and can be downloaded and used free of charge by anyone interested. I’m curious to see how educators, trainers, and students will use it and help shape its future development.
